Mes
enfances "
réel ;

à Nice, j'exposais mes " dessins d'enfant ".

"My childhoods"

"...
this way shorts-circuit the alibi of the report/ratio
to
reality; I transform what was already painting
in different painting, of the culture into different culture.
Here I take again a red spot, here such black layout,
there a blue, without direct reference to a reality
which is not initially of the color of painting "

Revue Toponymies n°2/3 Eté 1979
With the occasion of the catalogue "Forty years of Fluxus in Nice" Annie
Vautier remembers and recalls me that in 1969, within theframework of
a Fluxus Festival in Nice, I exposed my "drawings of child". They were
well my drawings, but imitated children, for the occasion, the days preceding
the exposure. In an obvious spirit of provocation. The project is different
today, since it aims at a training.
One could say ridiculous the project of a sexagenerian to enter in training
of the drawing. But it is not a question to learn how to draw, which I
continued to do year after year with more or less of constancy from the
school. Because one can never draw: each drawing is one challenge fiction
with reality. The stake is in the report/ratio of reality to the inscription.
To learn the drawing, it is to try to seize how reality can enter the
plan, how structure and is born an image which is directed and made direction
in the abstract vis-a-vis with apparent objectivity of reality. Two rounds
in a page are only two rounds. Put in ovoid the larger, they become two
eyes. That a sinuous feature shares the white of paper in sectors, and
the direction can emerge. The principle of my "drawings of childhoods"
is simple. To begin again with the brush with gouache, on a usual format
(65x50 cm), a drawing of child carried out with the felts or the colouring
pencils on banal A4. To include/understand (to adapt itself) how the drawing
functions. A little as claims it the naïve art, to show the true face
of the things by by keeping only the volatile gasoline.... The plastic
vision takes the dimensions about stopped only with the adult body. Child,
teenager we must constantly adapt us to the scaling of reality. The scale
of the apartment in which a child from three to four years lives will
be close divided little by two when it arrives at his size of adult! The
adult body will not have the same reports/ratios in the world as the transitory
body of childhood. It is necessary that the individual finds his formats
projective. One determines an institutional format of paper drawing of
65x50 cm which allows gesticuler arm, to swivel as well as possible on
the hips.
(They are only practical, insertable limits without problems within a
traditional framework. all the body, to pass from a circle 20 cm in diameter
traced with the only mobility of the wrist, with an arc of circle of 1m40
with the arm, and to trace much larger if I move the body: I can also
paint with the feet like Pollock (while walking), or Shiraya Kasuo, (of
the Gutaï group, which suspended with a cord combed with the feet) project
the body in the space of the workshop. The reflexion engaged with part
340 of painting in Patchwork, (chair, rest, ladder, frame...) between
also in these problems of the report/ratio of the body to space.]
I
chose for "my childhoods" the format 65x50 because it is starting from
the model in A4, in usual papers, nearest to the report/ratio of scale
between the body of a child and that of an adult. The formats used are
never innocent: thus I formerly worked on sheets because it located me
in the report/ratio of a "historical" practice at the human body. For
the child, the abstraction of reality in a drawing normally makes problem
in the choice of the significant features, but also in dimension and page-setting
of what is put in image. In the first times, it uses only one part, or
quite to the contrary it overflows. It would have the skill to reproduce
which it would be constrained, by the format and the effort of reduction
of scale, with another transposition that that of the simplified transfer
of the structures of reality. To choose to work on the model of the drawing
of childhood while passing from A4 to the 65x50 is still to change the
scale and to change the report/ratio at the white zones of surface. To
change the scale of the the drawing, it is also to transform the feature
of the pencil or the felt into a broader and sometimes multiplied trace.
The choice of the layout to the gouache contributes to the transfer of
the image. One of the astonishing remarks made on the result is in the
report of standardization of the drawings obtained. The diversity of the
models and the layouts persist, but it releases a unit from invoice which
must with the selected format and the matters used: texture paper drawing,
consistency of the gouache... It may be that in the "models" selected
among the multitude of possible the search for variety is unconsciously
accompanied by a search for constants.
Or, more simply, than the tiny deviations and compromises in the transfer
all go in the same direction. Any painting depends on a model. Although
the model is not always visible with the naked? il: because I build my
model. I give to an unspecified reality the statut of model, I am the
inventor. I model reality. I thus modelled the invention of weaving starting
from the hair of woman. The first work is thus to work the model out of
tool. In the infinite range of possible, I choose to take support, to
make sign from, and it does not matter which is the real model: an object,
a gesture, a space, an idea, a report/ratio of abstraction... The choice
which I make of the model is already an element of the strategy, but it
is the report/ratio which I draw up with this pretext which is determining.
The report/ratio by the glance with its contours, its surfaces, with its
structures, or the report/ratio of the model to the support like tool
medium of the color or the lights, transforms for the same "transitional"
object the signs obtained. It was said that to take for model the sign
of a shop in the street does not make of the painter a painter in letters:
it may be that the sign becomes illegible with the school direction, which
will perhaps return it, otherwise, more significant. The model can become
behavior in the gesture, tool in the print, always in the report/ratio
of the fraction: abstract reality/= concept.
When Cézanne paints tens of fabrics representing Sainte-Victoire, none
is identical to another. My model is a drawing of child to which I am
as faithful as Cézanne "copying" Sainte-Victoire. The artist teaches himself
more than it does not get information with his model. He never copies
reality, he uses it like the writer who describes a landscape: the words
are more important than the landscape origin. Because painter, the Cézanne
painter is by faker definition since its object weighs tons of rocks or
kilos of flesh, that it is weight of the things, and is translated in
the?uvre by the lightness of the feature, the color, the trace which is
like the phantom of the indicated subject. The magician reveals, but there
is always a trick. The uvre is an illusion, she writes or describes, and
in the table there is material reality only the dust of colors, a little
adhesive binding the unit to a support. The body or the mountain presented
misses as as the singer in the disc which, when it is listened to, occupies
all the space of the part. I wrote a few years ago: "I invented the hair".
I invent in "My childhoods" the drawing of child while drawing from the
bottom from obscure, among thousands of stones, the few rough stones which
will shine. Nothing more banal than a diamond stone before the size. What
characterizes the drawings of a child, especially during the time (three
to five years) chosen, during which the feature leaves the gribouillis,
they are the jumps from one day to another, from one moment to another,
an instability of the form in the search of the figure.
Successions of tests. More than to try to appear, this drawing indicates.
This groping towards the ordered writing of a chaos builds another space
that that of the page. It is not the drawing which the children build,
but themselves in their report/ratio of nomination to the things. To speak
about engineering about the children, it is pretty, and very stupid. Because
they do not create anything in the visual arts. Always in transit, they
cross the successive representations not to build a transmissible vision
overall, but to mark a passage towards another thing. They do not build
a plastic oeuvre, they are built: rather fascinating and sufficient work
so that one do not expect any more. This is why a drawing to the following
the codes change and tend normally towards an agreed vision: To establish
the standard which will make possible the reading by the other and other.
The objective is to take possession of reality, as with each word the
man adapts the objects and the beings. For saying its own vision, it is
necessary to see. Most beautiful of the drawings of school, so skilful
is and in a all the more obvious way as it is more skilful, is only one
drawing which obeys the codes agreed upon, (in what it is perfectly readable:
it is precisely says one an academic drawing). What says the drawings
of human "unfinished", they is how that is built towards unfinished more
completed, space, the difference, the impertinent colors, the proportions,
the resemblance, the abstract perception of the objects, how what can
be known as is.
What I seek in this advance of "My childhoods", it is the gesture founder
of the direction and, with the end, the letter. Birth orrebirth. To always
find the moving and misty border which separates the image from the writing,
there or passes the border between the resemblance and pure abstracted
diction, by the man, of what is.
